If you already paid an annual report letter

Do not assume the money is lost or the report is unfiled. Work in this order.

1. Find out whether the report was filed. Use your state’s business search. If the company filed it, the status shows it.
2. Read what you bought. The order confirmation describes the service. If it says the sender is a private filing service, you bought a filing.
3. Ask for a refund. Contact the sender, then your card issuer if you believe you were misled about who they are.
4. Tell the authorities. Your state’s Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission take complaints about misleading mailings.
